Registered Psychologist
Reg. #0909
|
Dr. Larry Waterman has been a Registered Psychologist since 1980. Originally from Alberta, Dr. Waterman grew up in Ontario where he practiced psychology from 1980 until 1986. In 1986 Dr. Waterman and his family moved to Quesnel, BC where he worked for the Quesnel Mental Health Association for a year before going into private practice. A year later, he accepted the position of Child and Youth Coordinator at the Nanaimo Mental Health Centre and in late 1989 started a private practice as Waterman & Associates which has continued since that time. Throughout the years a number of psychologists, social workers and clinical counsellors have worked at Waterman & Associates and continue to practice within the Nanaimo area. Dr. Waterman is particularly proud of promoting and helping to bring to the Nanaimo community new and unique psychological services such as Clinical Hypnosis, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Clinical Biofeedback to name a few.
As a former two-term Chair of the committee that monitors ethical complaints for the College of Psychologist of BC, Dr. Waterman is well aware of the importance of having a highly ethical, professional and responsible practice. He is also an Oral Examiner for the College and provides those services to candidates who are going though the process of registration in BC.
In addition to other areas of expertise, Dr. Waterman has studied Parent/Child Alienation and in 2006, in cooperation with the Nanaimo Men’s Resource Centre, helped produce an informative CD regarding this topic. For more information or to obtain a copy of that CD, please contact the Nanaimo Men’s Resource Centre at 250-716-1551 or visit their website at www.nanaimomen.com.
As of January 1, 2008, Dr. Waterman has limited his practice in psychology to providing psychotherapy for adults only. He is also involved in conducting Section 15 Custody and Access Assessments, Views of the Child Assessments, and Parenting Capacity Assessments. He has been accepted as an “Expert Witness” by both the Provincial and Supreme Courts and has been called upon to testify in many contentious cases in both levels of Family Court.
Dr. Waterman has recently added Parenting Coordination to the services he offers. Parenting Coordination refers to a process in which a Parenting Coordinator is either agreed upon by the parents or is appointed by the Court to assist parents who are having difficulty making decisions regarding their child/children. In BC, there is a list of approved Parenting Coordinators, which includes psychologists, lawyers, clinical counsellors, and social workers. These individuals all have special training in helping parents respond to the needs of their children through a process of mediation/arbitration. To obtain more information about the Parenting Coordination Program or those individuals who have been approved, please visit their website at www.bcparentingcoordinators.com. |
